A few notables…

A couple of items to bring to your attention.

1. DANCE ON SATURDAY, NOV 10 – 2-5PM

CHANGE OF LOCATION! The dance will be held at CRESTWOOD SECONDARY SCHOOL , 1885 SHERBROOKE ST. WEST. PETERBOROUGH. We will be in the cafeteria (which is where the A1 dancers dance at Spring Spree). It is a very nice hall with a stage. Due to our wonderful club with so many enthusiastic members, the executive felt it would be better to have a larger hall for this dance.

All of our dancers are invited (and encouraged) to come out on this day – including those who joined us in September. There will be Lift Lock members too and we hope many visitors from other clubs. There will be representatives from our Toronto and District Square dance Association and probably from the Ontario Federation of Square Dancers. Joe Uebelacker will be receiving a Trillium Long Service Award for 48 years calling square dancing.

We keep boasting about our club to the District and the Federation so please come out and show them we really do have a BIG club of happy dancers! Both club callers (Wayne and Joe) will be entertaining us on that day.

There will be a little more set-up required at the school and we will need about 8-10 people from Otonabee to come early – just after 1pm. There will be a sign up sheet for people to help. It will be on the flyer table on the next two club nights. A separate sign-up sheet will be there for volunteers to clean up. Please step forward to help with these jobs.

We will also have a sign-up sheet for pies!!!! We need about 36 pies. Please sign up. We usually get a good assortment so no need to specify what kind you will be bringing.

There will be other people using the school gyms but there is ample parking both in front and behind the school. You can also enter through the doors at the back parking lot.

2. MAINSTREAM BLITZ

We had a wonderful day on October 20th where 5 squares of dancers were taught all the moves of the mainstream program. Wayne will now be calling all 17 moves during club nights. This is the second time our club has taught mainstream in this way. From our survey in the spring our members asked for more dancing time on Mondays and less time standing around being taught.

For those few people who were not able to attend we do understand your disappointment in missing this teach. However all is not lost! Wayne is teaching the same moves every Tuesday night in Baltimore at Lakeshore Waves club. , Baltimore Recreation Centre, Recreation Road, Baltimore. 8-10pm. Speak to Wayne for more information.

Also mainstream (and basic for that matter) teaching is available on the website www.saddlebrookesquares.com/lessons.htm or go into our website www.otonabeesquares.org and click on the link. For those who do not have internet, we have a few DVD’s of the same program.

Have a happy Halloween party tonight!
Your Executive

Great time Saturday!

Thanks to all those who came out Saturday night.  Was a great dance and have had a lot of positive feedback.

Last night at our club night numbers were down. We hope you will be back next week. A notice was handed outPlease read it and we hope you can respond to the appropriate people. Two issues on the notice are: bus to dance in Stouffville on Nov 26 and the Demonstration we are planning at Lansdown Mall on Jan 7th.

Starting in January our new dancer lessons will take place on a Tuesday night for 4 weeks, beginning January 10th.  After that time, the new dancers will be invited to join our regular Monday dances.   Tell you friends about it!

If you have any comments, concerns, suggestions, etc., about the club please let someone on the executive know.   We can only do something about things if we know about them (or we can try).

Upcoming Dances

How’s your turkey belly after the holiday weekend?  Full I hope!  You can start working it off again next Monday at our club night and at a couple of upcoming dances!

Our club is hosting a Halloween Dance on October 30th from 2:00 – 4:30pm and we want you all to come – in costume!  Costumes are completely optional, but are encourages as prizes will be awarded for various categories.

Our neighbour club, Lift Lock Squares, is hosting their annual Pie Night Dance on Saturday November 12th.  There will be tips for beginner dancers so please be sure to join us there starting at 7:00pm!

Find out more about both events on our dances page.

Last Dance of November!

Wow, it’s the last dance of Novmeber 2010, ALREADY!  The fall dance season has passed quickly and we’ll soon be losing many of our snow birds to southern lands.  Hopefully everyone has new dancers to bring out to the club beginning January 10th at 7:00pm.  It will be a great chance for new club members to learn basics starting from scratch.

Jean Koning missed our club night last week as she was receiving a very prestigious award – the YMCA Peace Medallion.  Fortunately she was able to join us this week and we got to congratulate her on the achievement.  Visit the Peterborough Examiner website to see an article on Jean.

The executive is still looking for basket item donations for the Frosty Fling fundraiser.  Perhaps some of our members will receive a few gifts over the holiday season that they can’t use themselves and would like to re-gift to the club.  Donations will be taken in January.

Last Saturday a few dancers from our club attended a dance in Stouffville with callers Doug Holmes & Grant Logan.  It was a well attended event with about 90 dancers and 10 squares in a small hall.  A good time was had by all at the event and new friends met over snacks at the end.  Our Frosty Fling dance in January was promoted at the event by both callers so hopefully we have a great turn out too!

Finally, please check out the photos page as we’ve added some pictures from the Pie Night hosted by the Lift Lock squares with many of our club members in attendance.

Newsletter & News

A few reminders and notes were mentioned Monday night for our club members.  Everyone is invited to Pie Night, hosted by the Lift Lock Squares on Saturday November 20th at 7:00pm. Admission is free for Otonobee Squares members – see you there!

Also of note, we will be starting a new class of beginner dancers on January 10, 2011. Please bring friendsand family to join us. Please note that unlike September, when we took in new dancers over athree week span, in January they must begin on January 10th.  Further, beginning on the 10th, the dance evening will be extended by 1/2 houreach week. The beginners will have their teach session from 7-7:30pm each week. From7:30 until 9:30pm we will continue with the program we have now, alternating the levels, except that we now will have three levels, new basics, Sept basics and mainstream.
